Towards is pleased to present a solo booth of new works by Hangama Amiri as part of NADA Miami 2021.
Hangama Amiri works predominately in textiles to examine notions of home, as well as the ways in which gender, social norms and larger geopolitical conflicts impact the daily lives of women, both in Afghanistan and the diaspora.
In her presentation at NADA Miami, Amiri turns her attention to the dramatic shift in Aghanistan following the Taliban’s return to power in August of 2021.
Drawing from conversations with aunts, cousins, and friends still located in Kabul, Hangama explores the spaces that women have been limited to. These intimate, domestic spaces depicted take on increased significance given the numerous new restictions women are currently facing under the Taliban rule. Private homes become spaces to grieve, to support, and to ultimately plan for an uncertain future.
